The Market Towns Initiative
was introduced by the Countryside Agency in mid 2001. Its objective is to
encourage communities to examine ways to ensure that their towns are able
to carry on serving their communities. The initiative involves

Alford is the third largest market town in the District of East Lindsey after Louth and Horncastle. The town is set on the eastern edge of the Wolds which is designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The town has a population of around 3,500 and is the second town in East Lindsey to undergo the Countryside Agency’s ‘Healthcheck’ process which started in December 2002. The first steps were to engage with broad cross-section of the local community and this was achieved through a well attended public meeting in the Corn Exchange. Healthcheck Results. |
