This is very old woodland that lies on the eastern
side of the chalk hills of Lincolnshire
near Alford. This wood was mentioned in charters in the twelfth century.
Felling and replanting has taken place over the years.
The Lincolnshire Trust for Nature Conservation has
owned the land since 1980.
The present ridge overlooked the sea. In ancient times this was the coast.
Stone Age people would have looked down over the chalk cliffs to see the
waves pounding against the beach below.
