Rigsby Wood

Rigsby Wood • Ancient Woodland Nature Reserve

Rigsby Wood is very old woodland that lies on the eastern side of the chalk hills of Lincolnshire near Alford. This wood was mentioned in charters in the twelfth century. Felling and replanting has taken place over the years.

The Lincolnshire Trust for Nature Conservation has owned the land since 1980.

The present ridge overlooked the sea. In ancient times this was the coast. Stone Age people would have looked down over the chalk cliffs to see the waves pounding against the beach below.

Visitors will find road side parking and a path to the woods. A compacted trail runs through the woods allowing access but is not recommended for wheelchairs. The wood boast a variety of tree species, rich ground flora and is home to a good range of breeding birds. Rigsby Wood is particularly known for it’s impressive annual display of Bluebells.
